Valve Actuator Selection

The actuator must deliver enough thrust to seat against full ΔP, and fail to the safe position.

Quick pick (TL;DR)
  • Modulating control with fail-safe → pneumatic spring-diaphragm + smart positioner (the default).
  • Quarter-turn on/off → pneumatic piston (rack & pinion / scotch yoke).
  • No instrument air, or precise positioning / high thrust → electric.
  • Very high force → hydraulic / electro-hydraulic.
  • Always size thrust ≥ required to seat against full ΔP with margin, set the correct fail action (FC/FO/FL), and add ESD partial-stroke testing on safety valves.

Step 2 — Thrust check

Seating thrust vs ΔP
Seating force needed F = ΔP · A_seat + F_friction + F_seat-load Given ΔP_max (shutoff) = 20 bar = 2.0×10⁶ Pa seat dia = 50 mm → A = 1.96×10⁻³ m² Step 1 — Pressure force F_p = 2.0×10⁶ × 1.96×10⁻³ = 3.93 kN Step 2 — Add friction + packing/seat ≈ 5 kN → total ≈ 9 kN Step 3 — Margin ×1.3 safety → required ≈ 12 kN Step 4 — Select actuator rated thrust ≥ 12 kN → OK spring-diaphragm, FC, smart positioner

Actuator must beat ΔP × seat area + friction + seat load at worst-case ΔP, with margin.

Step 3 — Fail action & accessories

  • Set fail action from the safety case.
  • Positioner for modulating; solenoid for ESD.
  • Safety valves: add partial-stroke testing.

Actuator thrust calculator

Seating thrust vs ΔP
F = ΔP·A_seat + friction, × margin (worst-case ΔP).
Worst-case ΔP = max upstream, downstream depressurised. Spring-diaphragm = inherent fail-safe.

Common mistakes

  • Thrust on operating, not shutoff ΔP.
  • Electric assumed fail-safe.
  • No accumulator for piston fail-safe.
