IDMT gives a definite time per fault level; grade ≥ 0.3 s so downstream clears first.
Feeder → overcurrent 50/51 + earth fault 50N/51N. Motor → add thermal 49, unbalance 46, locked-rotor 48, restart 66. Transformer/generator → add differential 87. Set pickup just above full load, choose an IDMT curve (IEC SI is the default), and grade each upstream relay by ≥ 0.3 s so downstream clears first.
IEC 60255 (relays), IEEE C37.2 (ANSI device numbers), IEC 61850 (substation comms), IEC 60044 / 61869 (instrument transformers).
