Overview

Respiratory hazards harm slowly and invisibly; protection must match the hazard.

RPE is the last line of defence; ventilation comes first.

Respirator types & selection

  • Air-purifying respirators — disposable, half- or full-face with the right cartridge.
  • Cartridges matched to the hazard — P-filters, organic-vapour or acid-gas.
  • Powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) for higher protection.
  • Supplied-air or SCBA for IDLH or oxygen below 19.5% O₂.
  • APR must NOT be used in oxygen deficiency or IDLH.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Identify the contaminant and assess concentration against the limit.
  2. Apply the hierarchy — ventilation/LEV first, RPE for residual risk.
  3. Confirm oxygen level — never use an APR below 19.5% O₂ or in IDLH.
  4. Select the respirator type and cartridge to suit the hazard.
  5. Fit test each wearer on a clean-shaven face seal.
  6. Train wearers in donning, doffing, seal check and limitations.
  7. Inspect before use and follow a defined cartridge change-out schedule.
  8. Clean, dry and store respirators properly to keep them ready.
